Eight community groups have jointly made an application to the Town Planning Board to put in place a heritage monitoring process and an appropriate zoning designation for the historic Central Market – to ensure it is sensitively preserved.
The site on which the present 1939 Central Market building sits was Lot 16 in the first ever land auction in Hong Kong in June 1841 – it was reserved as a public market and is the only site in Hong Kong that has retained its use for its original purpose. The Central Market is, as explained in our submission to the Town Planning Board, a site of “high historical, contextual and architecture significance”.
The Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, announced in his 2009 Policy Address that the Central Market would be withdrawn from the Government Land Sales Application List and would be "re-vitalised" by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA).
A few weeks ago the URA drilled into the building’s walls and wrapped a vinyl hoarding onto a steel support structure covering the entire Central Market building – as well as damaging the exterior, the kitsch and ugly design shows incredible insensitivity and a complete lack of any appropriate design sense. An artist's impression at the front of the Market indicates the plans that the URA has for this site: another shopping mall!
The Central Market is an incredible public resource – and a visit inside the Market reveals a special place with superb natural light, high ceilings, excellent intact heritage and architectural features and an airy ambience that must be preserved. The attached photographs taken a few months ago show the excellent condition of the interior.
